Coventry has every kind of driveway, from the bay-fronted terraces of Earlsdon to the 1930s semis of Coundon and Stivichall and the post-war homes of Tile Hill. As a family-run tarmac driveway company in Coventry, Stonetech Paving knows those differences and plans each drive around them. Homeowners pick us as their tarmac driveway contractor in Coventry for a complete service: free advice and design, careful excavation, a proper sub-base and a smooth, sealed finish. We work in Whoberley, Chapelfields, Cheylesmore, Radford and Keresley, and along busy routes like Holyhead Road and Kenilworth Road where off-street parking really counts.
We start by digging out to a sound depth, then lay and compact MOT Type 1, a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course, setting falls so water clears the house and garage. Edging in block or granite setts keeps the tarmac crisp against Coventry's red brick terraces and semis, and we fit channel drains where a frontage runs back towards the door. All our tarmac drives carry a 10 year guarantee, we are fully insured, and we hold a 5.0 rating on TrustATrader.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
If tarmac is not quite right for your Coventry home, we also lay block paving and resin driveways, build patios, and arrange dropped kerbs so a new drive can be used legally from day one.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Many Coventry drives are narrow strips shared between pairs of semis, laid decades ago in concrete or early tarmac. If the base is still firm and the levels suit both neighbours, a resurface is often fine. Where the concrete has cracked into slabs, the drive dips in the middle, or roots from street trees have pushed it up, we take it out and start again from the sub-base.
10 year guaranteeCoventry's housing changes street by street. Earlsdon has its own conservation area of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, Chapelfields keeps its watchmakers' houses with top-floor workshops, and the Kenilworth Road conservation area is lined with large detached homes behind deep, tree-lined frontages, so the look of a new drive matters there. Coundon, Whoberley and Stivichall are dominated by 1930s semis, often with a shared side drive, while Tile Hill and Radford have post-war homes where a front garden is being turned into parking for the first time. If more than 5 square metres of that garden becomes impermeable hardstanding, planning permission is needed unless the run-off goes to a permeable surface or soakaway within your boundary. Dropped kerbs in the city are approved by Coventry City Council, and we can guide you through the application.
We work across Coventry and its suburbs, including Earlsdon, Coundon, Whoberley, Tile Hill, Spon End, Chapelfields, Allesley, Radford, Stivichall, Cheylesmore and Keresley.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.
We are an established, family-run paving and landscaping company, and most of our work comes from people who have seen a drive we laid.
More than 10 years of driveway and landscaping work means we know how drives in Coventry fail, and we build them so they do not.
We are a verified and vetted TrustATrader member with a 5.0 rating, and our reviews come from real local customers.

Not sure what you need? 02476 291 559Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
In Coventry we price tarmac driveways at £40 to £70 per square metre. A shared drive between 1930s semis, a terrace frontage with tight access or a larger detached plot off Kenilworth Road each sit differently in that range. The main factors are dig-out depth, access for a mini digger and skip, removing old concrete, the edging you choose, drainage, and whether a dropped kerb is required. Ring 02476 291 559 and we will give you a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
