Steep drives are a fact of life in B97, where homes in Headless Cross, Webheath and Batchley sit on Redditch's hills and their driveways take a battering from rain and parked cars. We are a family-run tarmac driveway company in Redditch, laying new drives, widening frontages for extra parking and replacing broken slabs and split concrete. Anyone looking for a tarmac driveway contractor in Redditch who deals with slopes properly will find we handle everything ourselves, from the dig-out to the edging, working to British Standards. We also cover Crabbs Cross, Hunt End and Callow Hill, plus Astwood Bank, Studley and Alvechurch.
On Redditch's slopes, the base matters more than anything. We excavate the old surface, lay and compact MOT Type 1 in layers, then put down a binder course followed by a hot-rolled surface course. Block or granite sett edging stops the sides spreading, and we fit channel drains across the bottom of steeper drives so water does not run towards the house or garage. Our tarmac drives are covered by a 10 year guarantee, we are fully insured, and customers rate us 5.0 on TrustATrader.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
Homeowners in Redditch can also come to us for block paving, resin driveways and patios, and we can sort out a dropped kerb so a new drive is fully usable from day one.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Plenty of Redditch drives date from when the new town estates went up in the 1960s and 1970s. If yours is still firm and level, a new surface course over the old tarmac can be a cost-effective refresh. On steep drives where water has washed out the base, or where the surface has split along the line of the slope, we would rebuild from the ground up instead.
10 year guaranteeB97 covers a real mix of housing. Headless Cross has Victorian and Edwardian terraces along Evesham Road with very little frontage, Batchley was built as a post-war estate, and Webheath has larger detached homes from more recent decades. The new town layout also left many houses with parking courts or footpath frontages, so getting a car onto the plot is not always simple, and any new crossing over the pavement needs approval from Worcestershire County Council as the highway authority. Drainage is the other key point. On heavy ground and steep slopes, water has to be managed, and if more than 5 square metres of front garden is paved with impermeable material, planning permission is required unless the rain drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your property.
We lay driveways right across Redditch and in neighbouring Bromsgrove, Barnt Green, Astwood Bank and Mappleborough Green, so a visit to B97 is never out of our way.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.
We are an established, family-run paving and landscaping company, and most of our work comes from people who have seen a drive we laid.

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, give us a call.
Not sure what you need? 01527 535228Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
Expect to pay £40 to £70 per square metre for a tarmac driveway in Redditch. Steeper drives often need a deeper dig and extra drainage at the bottom, which pushes the price up, as does breaking out an old concrete base or working where the only access is through a parking court or narrow side path. The edging you choose and whether you need a new dropped kerb make a difference too. Ring 01527 535228 and we will provide a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
