Daventry grew quickly from the 1960s onwards, and many of the drives laid on estates such as Southbrook, The Grange and Lang Farm are now showing their age. Stonetech Paving is a family-run tarmac driveway company in Daventry and the surrounding villages, replacing broken concrete, sunken paving and loose gravel with neat, hard-wearing tarmac. Newer homes at Monksmoor Park and Middlemore often just want a wider drive for a second car. Whatever the job, choosing a careful tarmac driveway contractor in Daventry matters, and we include free advice, planning and design so the finished drive suits the house and the street.
We start by digging out to a firm formation, then build up a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course, with block or granite sett edging to hold everything in place and drainage to keep water off the drive. Tarmac drives built this way cope well with the slopes found on the Borough Hill side of town. We are fully insured, hold a 5.0 TrustATrader rating and give a 10 year guarantee on our work.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
We are not only tarmac specialists in Daventry, since many customers also ask us for block paving, resin driveways, a new dropped kerb or a patio at the back of the house.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Many of the original estate drives in Daventry are now several decades old. If the base has held up, an overlay can refresh the surface at a lower cost than starting again. Where the drive slopes towards the house, has sunk at the edges or breaks up when you turn the steering wheel, a full dig-out is the only lasting fix, and we will tell you honestly which applies.
10 year guaranteeHousing in Daventry is a clear mix of eras. The town centre around the Market Square, Sheaf Street and the High Street is much older, with tight frontages and little off-road parking, and sits within a conservation area. The Southbrook estate, begun in 1966 on the south-east slopes of Borough Hill, and later estates such as Ashby Fields and Lang Farm have open-plan fronts that suit a full-width drive, while Monksmoor Park is much newer. Sloping plots mean thinking carefully about where rainwater goes. If you lay tarmac over more than 5 square metres of front garden without letting water drain to a permeable area, you will need planning permission. Dropped kerbs here are handled by West Northamptonshire Council, which must approve any new or widened crossing.
From Daventry itself to Long Buckby, Weedon Bec, Braunston, Welton and Byfield, we work across this part of West Northamptonshire.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Not sure what you need? 01327 898 745Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
Our guide price for tarmac in Daventry is £40 to £70 per square metre. The final figure depends on how much needs digging out, particularly on sloping drives, whether old concrete or block paving must be lifted and taken away, the type of edging, how much drainage is needed and how easy the access is. If you also need a dropped kerb approved by West Northamptonshire Council, that is added too. Call 01327 898 745 for a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
