Solihull's tree-lined roads, from the large detached homes off Warwick Road to the family houses around Hillfield and Monkspath, ask a lot of a driveway. Here, Stonetech Paving operates as a tarmac driveway company in Solihull that handles the whole job, from breaking out old concrete to laying the final surface and edging. If you live near Malvern and Brueton Park, along Blossomfield Road or over towards Olton and want a tarmac driveway contractor in Solihull who keeps the work tidy and the price fixed, we would be glad to help. Every drive is surveyed before we quote, so you know exactly what is planned and why.
Our tarmac drives start with a proper excavation, followed by a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course rolled to a smooth, tight finish. Granite setts or block edging frame the drive and keep the lines straight, and drainage is designed around the falls of each plot. Solihull's interwar semis and larger post-war detached homes often need wide drives with room to turn, and that is what we build. Every job carries a 10 year guarantee, full insurance and a 5.0 TrustATrader rating.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
Alongside tarmac, we lay block paving and resin driveways, build patios and fit dropped kerbs for Solihull homeowners, so a whole frontage can be handled by one team from start to finish.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Many B91 drives are long and wide, laid decades ago and now patched where cars turn. If the base is firm and there is room to raise the level without bridging the damp-proof course, a new surface course over the existing tarmac is good value. Mature trees are common here, though, and where roots have heaved the surface we would dig out, deal with the roots and rebuild from the sub-base up.
10 year guaranteeSolihull has more conservation areas than many residents realise. Around the town centre there are the Solihull, Warwick Road, Malvern Hall and Brueton Avenue, Ashleigh Road and Granville Road areas, and Olton has its own, so materials and edging need real thought on the older frontages in those streets. Away from them, the housing is mostly interwar and post-war, with generous front gardens that tempt owners to pave the lot. Before you do, bear in mind that covering over 5 square metres of front garden with a non-porous surface needs planning permission unless rainwater runs to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own land. Adding or widening a dropped kerb is a separate approval from Solihull Council as highway authority.

What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Not sure what you need? 0121 673 2688Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
Expect to pay roughly £40 to £70 per square metre for a tarmac driveway in Solihull. Larger plots often sit lower in that range per square metre, while the price rises with deeper dig-outs on soft ground, tricky access past side gates, removing old concrete, premium edging such as granite setts, extra drainage to keep within the permeable surface rules and any dropped kerb work with Solihull Council. You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
