Across a city as varied as Leicester, no two driveways are quite the same. Stonetech Paving works as a tarmac driveway company in Leicester for homeowners in suburbs such as Knighton, Evington, Aylestone and Humberstone, as well as further out in Oadby, Wigston and Birstall. Some customers want a front garden turned into parking for two cars, others need a cracked concrete drive replaced. As a family-run tarmac driveway contractor in Leicester, we offer free advice, planning and design, and we explain each stage so you know what you are paying for and how the work will run.
Our tarmac drives are built in layers: we excavate, lay and compact an MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course, with block or granite sett edging and drainage to stop puddles forming. That approach works on the interwar semis of Aylestone and Evington just as well as on larger detached homes in Stoneygate. We are fully insured, carry a 5.0 rating on TrustATrader and give a 10 year guarantee.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
If tarmac is not quite right for your home, we also lay block paving and resin driveways in Leicester, and we handle dropped kerbs and patios too.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Plenty of Leicester drives are good candidates for an overlay, especially on interwar and post-war semis where the original base is still firm. If the tarmac has sunk, a shared drive between two houses has broken up along the middle, or roots from nearby street trees have lifted the surface, we will recommend a full dig-out instead.
10 year guaranteeLeicester's suburbs each have their own character. Stoneygate, Knighton Village and South Highfields are conservation areas with many large Victorian and Edwardian houses, where boundary walls, gate piers and front gardens matter to the street scene. Clarendon Park and Westcotes are dominated by terraces with little or no space for parking, while Evington, Aylestone and Humberstone have many interwar and post-war semis with shared or narrow drives. Much of the area sits on clay that holds water after heavy rain. Surfacing more than 5 square metres of front garden with impermeable tarmac needs planning permission unless the runoff drains to a permeable area within the property. Dropped kerbs inside the city are approved by Leicester City Council, while Oadby, Wigston, Blaby and Birstall fall under Leicestershire County Council.
We work throughout Leicester and nearby places including Oadby, Wigston, Narborough, Blaby, Syston, Thurmaston and Birstall.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, give us a call.
Not sure what you need? 0116 355 2413Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
For most homes in Leicester, tarmac costs between £40 and £70 per square metre. The biggest variables are how deep the dig-out needs to be on clay ground, whether an old concrete drive or front garden wall has to be removed, how easy access is on busy terraced streets, the edging you choose and any new drainage. If you need a dropped kerb, the council approval and kerb works add to the cost. Call 0116 355 2413 for a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
