Across Stratford-upon-Avon, driveways range from the frontages of Victorian villas on Avenue Road to the newer family homes in Bishopton and the cottages near Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery. If you need a tarmac driveway company in Stratford-upon-Avon that builds the base properly rather than skimming over problems, Stonetech Paving is family-run and works to British Standards. We lay new drives, extend parking for a second car and replace cracked concrete and loose gravel. With us as your tarmac driveway contractor in Stratford-upon-Avon, there is one team from excavation to edging, whether you live in Tiddington, off the Alcester Road or out in Wootton Wawen or Bearley.
Parts of Stratford sit on clay that moves as it wets and dries, so a thin base is a false economy. We excavate to firm ground, lay and compact MOT Type 1, then add a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a tight, hard-wearing finish. Granite setts or contrasting blocks frame the edge, which suits the brick villas of Old Town, and we build in gullies or soakaways where the fall needs them. Our tarmac drives come with a 10 year guarantee, full insurance and a 5.0 TrustATrader rating.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
In Stratford-upon-Avon we are just as often asked for block paving, resin driveways, patios and dropped kerbs, and materials can be combined, for example a tarmac drive with a block-paved border and a resin path to the front door.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
On many of the inter-war and post-war semis off Evesham Road and Banbury Road, the drive is a single strip shared with next door, so an overlay only makes sense if both halves are level and solid. Where an old concrete base has cracked into slabs, or a mature tree has pushed up the edge, we recommend digging out and starting again rather than laying fresh tarmac over a surface that is still moving.
10 year guaranteeStratford is a town of contrasts. Old Town and the streets near Holy Trinity Church fall within the town centre conservation area, and in Shottery the thatched and timber-framed cottages call for a softer edge than a plain concrete kerb. Bridgetown and Tiddington sit close to the Avon, and after a wet winter some low-lying gardens there hold water, so a new drive needs a proper outfall. Because of this, drainage comes before tarmac on every plan: surfacing more than 5 square metres of front garden with an impermeable finish requires planning permission unless the water is led into a permeable border or soakaway on your own land. Crossing the pavement to reach a new parking space means a dropped kerb, which Warwickshire County Council must approve before any work begins.
Our team works throughout Stratford-upon-Avon and its neighbouring villages, from Claverdon and Henley-in-Arden to Alcester and Bidford-on-Avon, so we know the local streets and soils.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Not sure what you need? 01789 507173Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
Our guide price for a tarmac driveway in Stratford-upon-Avon is £40 to £70 per square metre. A straightforward replacement on an open frontage sits towards the lower end. The figure rises if we need a deeper dig on soft clay, have to break out an old concrete slab, are working with restricted access in Old Town, or need new channel drains, sett edging or a dropped kerb. To get an exact price for your own drive, call 01789 507173 and we will give you a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
