From the timber-framed cottages on Butter Street to the family homes around Kinwarton and Arden Road, Alcester has plenty of driveways that have seen better days. Stonetech Paving is a family-run tarmac driveway company in Alcester and the surrounding B49 villages, laying new drives, widening parking areas and replacing tired concrete. Hire us as your tarmac driveway contractor in Alcester and the same team handles the dig-out, the sub-base, the tarmac and the edging, so one crew is accountable from the first measure to the final roll. We also cover Great Alne, Oversley Green, Coughton and Wixford, so a neighbour's recommendation rarely takes us far.
Much of Alcester sits on low ground where the River Arrow meets the Alne, so we take the base seriously. Old surfaces are dug out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base goes in, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course on top. Block or granite sett edging keeps the margins tidy beside period brickwork, and channel drains or soakaways deal with run-off. Our tarmac drives carry a 10 year guarantee, we are fully insured, and our TrustATrader rating stands at 5.0.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
Tarmac is not the only option for Alcester homes. We also lay block paving, resin driveways and patios, and handle dropped kerbs, so if a softer finish suits a period frontage better, we will tell you.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
A resurface can work on the estate drives off Arden Road and around Kinwarton where the original base is still sound and the problem is simply a worn, faded top. If the drive has sunk near the garage, cracked across the middle or been lifted by roots from a front-garden tree, an overlay only hides the fault for a winter or two, and a full dig-out is the better spend.
10 year guaranteeAlcester's historic centre is a conservation area, and the Georgian and timber-framed properties along Henley Street, Church Street and Butter Street often have narrow side access and tight frontages, so we plan materials and edging with the street scene in mind. Out towards Allimore Lane and Birmingham Road the housing is newer and the drives wider, but the town's position where the Arrow and the Alne join means some gardens hold water after heavy rain. That ties into planning as well: a front garden of more than 5 square metres covered in non-porous tarmac needs permission unless the rainwater is directed onto a lawn, border or soakaway, which we design in from the start. If you want a new or wider dropped kerb onto the road, approval comes from Warwickshire County Council, and we can help you through the application.
We lay driveways across Alcester and nearby in Great Alne, Temple Grafton, Bidford-on-Avon and Studley, so working in B49 is part of our normal routine.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Not sure what you need? 01789 507173Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
For most Alcester driveways, budget £40 to £70 per square metre. Where your drive lands in that range depends on how deep we need to dig, whether a skip and machinery can get onto the plot or have to work from a narrow lane in the old town, and whether old concrete has to be broken out and removed. Edging, extra drainage on low ground near the rivers and any new dropped kerb also add to the cost. Call 01789 507173 for a fixed quote after a free survey.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
