Henley-in-Arden's mile-long High Street is lined with timber-framed buildings, but behind it, and out along Warwick Road, Station Road and Beaudesert Lane, are plenty of family homes whose driveways need attention. Our family-run business works as a tarmac driveway company in Henley-in-Arden, laying new drives, widening existing ones and replacing broken surfaces that have gone past patching. Being a tarmac driveway contractor in Henley-in-Arden who handles every stage, we look after the full job, from excavation to the final pass of the roller on hot tarmac. We work across Beaudesert as well, and in nearby Wootton Wawen, Claverdon and Studley.
For homes along the Alne valley, we start by digging out to solid ground and laying a well-compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. A dense binder course goes down next, then a hot-rolled surface course that seals tight. We finish with block or granite sett edging, which sits well beside the town's older brick and timber, and add drainage channels where a drive falls towards the house. Fully insured and backed by a 10 year guarantee, our tarmac drives are laid by a team rated 5.0 on TrustATrader.

Every drive is built from the ground up, so the finish you see is backed by a base that stays level for years.
Full dig-out, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a binder course and a hot-rolled surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing drive.
Where the base is sound, a new tarmac surface over the old one gives a fresh, even finish for less than a full rebuild.
Classic black, or red tarmac for a warmer look. Contrasting bands and borders can mark out parking bays and paths.
A tarmac driveway with a border of block paving, granite setts or kerbs holds the edges firm and frames the house.
Potholes, sunken patches and failed edges cut out square, the base re-compacted and new hot tarmac rolled in flush.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls to a border so rainwater has somewhere to go, plus help with dropped kerb applications.
Not every Henley-in-Arden property suits tarmac, and we are happy to lay block paving, a resin driveway, a new patio or a dropped kerb instead, or mix several of them on the same job.

Hairline cracks that widen each winter usually point to water getting into the base.
A surface that sheds grit or breaks into holes has worn through its binder.
Standing water means the falls have sunk or there is nowhere for rain to drain.
Growth through the joints and bulges near trees break the surface apart from below.
Sunken areas where the car parks show the sub-base was too thin for the load.
Up towards Beaudesert and the Mount, some drives climb noticeably from the road to houses set back on the hillside. If the base has kept its shape, a fresh surface course laid over the top can look as good as new. Where rainwater has scoured the slope, roots have broken the edge, or old tarmac has crumbled into potholes, a full dig-out and new base is the lasting fix.
10 year guaranteeMost of Henley's High Street is a conservation area with a long run of listed buildings, so frontages and yards there need care, and a dark tarmac with a sett edge is often the most sympathetic choice. Beaudesert Lane runs past St Nicholas' Church towards the Mount, and the homes off it and along Warwick Road generally have more room to park. The River Alne has flooded parts of the town in the past, so drainage is something we check on every survey. If your front garden is over 5 square metres and the new surface will be impermeable, you will need planning permission unless the rainwater runs into a lawn, gravel strip or soakaway within your boundary. A new vehicle crossing over the pavement needs consent from Warwickshire County Council.
We regularly work in Henley-in-Arden and Beaudesert as well as nearby Wootton Wawen, Bearley and Alcester, so you get a team that already knows the area.
We also cover these nearby areas with the same team and the same guarantees.
What happens after you call, from the first visit to parking on your new drive.
We measure up, check levels and drainage, talk through edging and colour, then send a fixed written quote.
The old surface is removed and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid to the right depth for your vehicles.
Edging is set on concrete and drains or falls are built in, so the edges stay put and water runs away.
A binder course goes down first, then the hot surface course is laid and rolled to a smooth, even finish.
We leave the site tidy, walk the drive with you and explain when you can park, usually after 24 to 48 hours.

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, give us a call.
Not sure what you need? 01564 718416Small cracks can be cleaned, dried and sealed with a tarmac crack filler. Potholes and larger failures need the damaged tarmac cut out square, the base checked and re-compacted, and new hot tarmac laid and rolled level with the surrounding surface. If cracks are spreading across the whole drive, the problem is usually the sub-base, and a professional survey will tell you whether a repair or a resurface is the better spend.
Scrub the moss off with a stiff brush and a mild detergent solution, or use a moss killer made for hard surfaces, leave it for the time stated, then brush and rinse. A pressure washer on a low setting helps, but a high setting can loosen the stones in the surface. Cutting back overhanging branches and improving drainage on shaded edges stops it coming back.
For a family driveway used by cars, we lay a binder course and a surface course, with the finished tarmac usually 30mm to 50mm thick on top of a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Heavier vehicles such as vans or motorhomes need a deeper sub-base and thicker layers. The sub-base matters as much as the tarmac, because that is what stops dips and cracks forming later.
Sweep off loose debris first, then scrub stubborn dirt with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Use a specialist tarmac cleaner or degreaser for stains. A pressure washer on a low setting is fine for algae, but avoid high pressure, which can strip the fine stone from the surface. Regular sweeping and clearing leaves from the edges keeps the drive looking newer for longer.
Most tarmac driveways in Henley-in-Arden come in at £40 to £70 per square metre. The final figure depends on how far down we need to dig, whether machinery can reach a drive tucked behind the High Street or set well back from the road, and whether there is old concrete to break out and take away. Your choice of edging, extra drainage on low ground near the Alne and a new dropped kerb all affect the price too. Call 01564 718416 for a fixed quote.
You can usually walk on a new tarmac driveway straight away, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. In hot weather the surface stays softer for longer, so avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary and keep car jacks, motorbike stands and skips off it for the first few weeks.
Blot fresh oil straight away with a cloth or paper towel. For older stains, cover the area with an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or baking soda, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. Then scrub with a degreaser made for tarmac, or washing-up liquid and warm water, and rinse well. Avoid solvents such as white spirit, which soften the bitumen.
A tarmac driveway is surfaced with tarmacadam, crushed stone bound together with bitumen and laid hot, then rolled smooth. It is the same family of material used on roads, which is why it copes so well with daily parking. It is quick to lay, low maintenance and usually more affordable than block paving or resin bound surfaces.
A well laid tarmac driveway lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with a little care. The biggest factors are a properly compacted sub-base, the right thickness for the vehicles using it, and good drainage. Filling small cracks early and keeping the edges clear of weeds and leaves helps it reach the top of that range.
As a guide, a tarmac driveway costs £40 to £70 per square metre. Larger, open drives with a sound base sit at the lower end. Small or awkward drives, deep dig-outs, old concrete removal, block or granite edging and extra drainage push the price up. A free survey gives you a fixed figure for your own drive.
